How Do Gravity Belt Thickeners Work?

Compositech’s GT Series gravity belt thickeners (also known as gravity tables) concentrate sludge through a streamlined, four-stage gravity drainage process designed for continuous operation:

  • Polymer Conditioning: Sludge is first treated with polymers to flocculate the solids, allowing water to release more freely from the specialized "flocs."
  • Gravity Drainage: The conditioned sludge is fed onto a horizontal, permeable synthetic belt. As the belt moves, water drains through the fabric into a collection basin, supported by a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) grid.
  • Active Agitation: A series of plows and chicanes (rows of vertical blades) furrow and turn the sludge. This constant agitation opens new drainage paths in the sludge bed to maximize water removal.
  • Clean Discharge: At the end of the table, doctor blades (scrapers) remove the thickened sludge. Simultaneously, a high-pressure spray wash system cleans the returning belt to ensure the drainage mesh remains unobstructed for 24/7 performance.
